AI Usage Policy

Ethical Guidelines for AI-Assisted Academic Publishing at StarNexus Science Press

I. General Provisions

StarNexus Science Press ("the Press") actively embraces the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic publishing, while also recognizing the academic ethics risks that may arise from improper AI use. This policy aims to clarify the boundaries of AI use in manuscript writing, review, editing, and publishing, ensuring a balance between academic integrity and innovation.

Core Principle: AI is an assistive tool, not a substitute for author attribution. The creative contributions and academic responsibilities of human authors are inseparable.

II. Permitted Use Cases

2.1 Language Polishing & Grammar Checking

Authors may use AI tools (such as Grammarly, DeepL Write) for language polishing, grammar correction, and expression optimization. Such use does not need to be disclosed in the manuscript.

2.2 Translation Services

Using AI translation tools to translate papers from non-English to English, or for bidirectional translation to improve readability, should be briefly explained in the Acknowledgments or Methods section.

2.3 Data Analysis & Visualization Assistance

When using AI for data analysis, code generation, and figure enhancement, authors must ensure:

  • Taking responsibility for AI-generated content and verifying its accuracy;
  • Clearly stating which AI tools were used and their purposes in the Methods section;
  • Retaining original data and AI-generated intermediate results for verification.

2.4 Literature Search & Review

Using AI for literature screening, hotspot analysis, and review outline generation is permitted, but the final literature review content must be written and overseen by the authors.

III. Prohibited Use Cases

The following behaviors are considered serious violations and may result in rejection, retraction, and reporting to the author's institution:

  • Using AI to generate core research content: Including but not limited to using LLMs like ChatGPT, Claude to directly generate research hypotheses, experimental designs, or core conclusions.
  • Falsifying or tampering with data: Strictly prohibited to use AI to generate false experimental data, simulation results, or tamper with images/videos.
  • Replacing author attribution: AI tools must not be listed as authors. Only natural persons or legal entities with substantial contributions to the paper qualify for authorship.
  • Duplicate publication & self-plagiarism: Prohibited to use AI to rewrite published papers and submit them to the Press or other publishers.
  • Circumventing plagiarism detection: Deliberately using AI to rewrite text to bypass plagiarism detection systems will be considered academic misconduct.

IV. Author Disclosure Requirements

When a paper involves AI use (except for language polishing), authors must:

  • Clearly state the AI tool name, version, and purpose in the "Methods" or "Acknowledgments" section of the manuscript;
  • Take full academic responsibility for AI-generated content, including but not limited to accuracy, originality, and citation integrity;
  • Provide detailed AI use logs or conversation records upon request from editors or reviewers.

V. AI-Assisted Peer Review & Editing

5.1 Intelligent Plagiarism Checking & Pre-screening

The Press uses AI-driven similarity detection tools (such as iThenticate) to screen for potential plagiarism and uses natural language processing technology for format compliance pre-screening.

5.2 Peer Review Assistance

Subject to respecting reviewers' independent judgment, AI can be used for:

  • Assisting in matching the most suitable review candidates;
  • Providing relevant literature recommendations to reviewers;
  • Detecting logical gaps or methodological flaws in manuscripts (for reference only, not replacing human judgment).

5.3 Ethics Review

The Press has established an AI Ethics Expert Panel to conduct special reviews of manuscripts involving AI use, requiring authors to supplement materials or modify disclosure statements when necessary.

VI. Violation Handling

For manuscripts that violate this policy, the Press will take the following measures based on the severity:

  • Warning and required modifications: Requiring authors to supplement disclosures or remove non-compliant AI-generated content.
  • Rejection: For serious or repeated violations, manuscripts will be directly rejected.
  • Retraction: If published articles are found to have violated AI use policies, the Press will initiate retraction procedures after verification and publish notices on the official website and academic databases.
  • Reporting: For egregious cases, the Press will report to the author's institution and relevant academic institutions.

VII. Policy Updates

As AI technology continues to evolve rapidly, the Press will regularly revise this policy based on industry developments and regulatory requirements. Significant changes will be notified to authors and reviewers through official website announcements.
